Little Egret poised to strike

The Little Egret was once a rare species in Southern England, but now it’s quite a common sight. It’s perhaps unfair to pick favourites but I do enjoy watching the egrets more than their larger cousin the Grey Heron.¬†They have a busy pattern of behaviour that’s always interesting to observe rather than the often motionless heron.

This image was captured at the Lower Test nature reserve just outside the western edge of the New Forest near Southampton.
