Small Red Damselfly

The Small Red Damselfly is a rarity across most of the UK but one of the best places to see this species is the New Forest where it thrives on boggy heathland as it prefers conditions with acidic soil which are common in the area.

These damselflies are quite easy to identify because there are only two species which are red in colour. The other, the Large Red Damselfly has black legs whereas you can see in the above image that the Small Red has orange/red legs.

That is of course if you can find one! These are very small insects so often take some careful searching. I got this image by being up early in the morning and being lucky in finding one still covered in dew which meant it couldn’t fly away. A careful approach meant I was able to get a detailed shot using a 105mm macro lens.
