Common Darter dragonfly

The Common Darter is one of the most regularly seen dragonflies in late summer across the New Forest. Often it will still be present through the autumn months long after it has become too cold for other species.

It’s also one of the most easily photographed as it tends to return repeatedly to the same perching spot, so it’s possible with minimal fieldcraft knowledge to find this Darter on a perch lie down close by and know that, even if you disturb it, a 5-10 minute wait should see it back in that spot again but with you now nicely ready with the camera pre-focussed to take the photograph. That’s the technique I used to get this shot.
